Tips for Using a Hot Glue Gun

A glue gun uses hot melt adhesive, also known as glue sticks, which are glue in solid form (learn more here). The gun melts the sticks and it is applied as a liquid.

The glue bonds as it solidifies after being applied. Compared to many other types of adhesives you could use when crafting, hot glue offers a more durable bond. Here are some tips.

• Let your glue gun warm up before using, some cheaper glue guns will take about 10 – 15 minutes.  The Tec-305 takes roughly 2 mins. I warm mine up on a silicone mat so that any drips won’t be on my table top. The glue gun will be hot to the touch.
• To prevent a mess all over the place when not in use, keep your glue gun upright. Use a stand if necessary, or place it on the built-in stand. This will prevent it from also setting surfaces on fire.
• What prevents glue sticks from stringing as much, exactly? Before using them, keep them in the freezer! Take them out and immediately place them in your glue gun (tip from Mod Podge Rocks).
• Avoid attempting to fix a mistake while the glue is still hot. Self-burning will result. Let the adhesive cool before attempting to remove it. Usually, when it’s warm but not hot, you may peel it off or scrape it away.
• Before applying adhesive, clean surfaces like glass. Use rubbing alcohol or gentle soap and water to clean. Try lightly sanding the surface to roughen it up if you’re having difficulties glueing things.
• When working with delicate fabrics, such as lace or nylon, use a lower temperature to prevent melting or burning.
